Sheets
Fiber plus weave against skin. Percale vents; viscose and lyocell are sold as moisture-wicking. Cheapest experiment. If the mattress is a heat sink, new sheets will only do so much.

Sheets are the layer on your skin. A mattress pad is a thin layer under the fitted sheet. A foam topper is a different object that can add inches of foam, including heat-holding memory foam. Mixing those three words is how people buy the wrong SKU.

Thin cushioned cover with a skirt, under the fitted sheet. Cozy Earth: 100% bamboo viscose, light padding, 20-inch pocket. Slumber Cloud Core: 0.25 in thick, Outlast-coated lining, 20-inch pocket. Not waterproof unless the SKU says so.
A 2 to 3 inch comfort slab. Gel-infused memory foam is a common cooling label; foam still has thermal mass. We are not listing unsourced foam SKUs here. If you need pressure relief, that is a mattress-feel purchase, not a sheet purchase.
The Bamboo Mattress Pad PDP draws the line: the pad uses 100% bamboo viscose for light padding, breathability, and temperature regulation without an overly plush bed. Their Cooling Mattress Protector is described as a waterproof barrier without the same padding. A topper, in their FAQ, is the thicker comfort layer. Listed pad price: $128 ($102.40 with 20% off on fetch). 10-year warranty / 100-night trial / free shipping $100+. Care is strict: rinse cycle only, do not spin; dry delicate/low or hang.

Brand copy ties Outlast to NASA spacesuit textiles and cites sleep-study percentages. Those are manufacturer/Outlast claims. CoolSleeper does not convert them into a medical result and will not tell you a pad treats night sweats.
Start with sheets if your current sheets are flannel, high-TC sateen, or polyester microfiber. The mattress feels fine; you just stick to the top layer.
Add a pad if the mattress itself runs hot (especially foam) and sheets did not change much. You want a washable surface layer without changing mattress feel much. These pads are 0.25 in or thin profile, not a new bed.
Stacking a heat-trapping comforter on cooling sheets cancels the sheet. We did not pull comforter fill weights on this pass, so we are not ranking them.
Most people should change sheets first. If the mattress is foam and still dumps heat, add a thin cooling pad (Cozy Earth bamboo viscose pad listed $128, or Slumber Cloud Core/Performance). Do not buy a thick memory-foam topper and expect it to behave like percale. Active water or air systems (Eight Sleep, BedJet, ChiliSleep) are a later, higher-ticket page. They are hardware, not this pad vs sheet decision.
